Deepfake AI to be Hosted on Indian Servers Soon: IT Minister

Indian IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Thursday that the Chinese AI platform Deepfake will soon begin hosting its services on Indian servers. He stated that hosting the open-source model R1 ChatGPT by Deepfake in India is a key step in addressing data security and privacy issues. Teams will soon release details about the number of servers required and their capacities, he mentioned. According to the Ministry of IT, after evaluating the data security features of Deepfake, the decision was made to host it on Indian servers.

Deepfake, a Chinese company, surpassed Apple's App Store by ranking as the top free app with its AI model, R1 ChatGPT. It has challenged the AI dominance of US-based companies, particularly Silicon Valley front-runner OpenAI. Meanwhile, AI chipmaker and Wall Street superstar Nvidia lost $590 billion in market capitalization on Monday, the largest one-day loss in history for any company. However, critics have raised concerns over data security and privacy issues due to Deepfake's origin in China. To overcome these concerns, it has been decided to host Deepfake AI on Indian servers soon.

"Deepfake is an open-source model, and hosting it on our servers will address data privacy concerns," said IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. He further added, "We have already hosted large language models like Llama on Indian servers, and now we are going to host Deepfake as well." Teams have already conducted analyses on the project, including the number of servers and their capacities.
