MI, led by Reliance Industries, is now involved in international leagues, further solidifying its dominance in the world of cricket. This partnership enhances The Hundred league's commercial value and opens new opportunities for the sport.

Mumbai Indians blockbuster deal with crores, first IPL team!

The England Cricket Board (ECB) oversees the franchise league ‘The Hundred’, in which 8 teams compete. The ECB holds a 50% stake in these teams. However, now the ECB plans to sell these stakes to private investors. The first such stake was acquired by Mumbai Indians (MI). The most successful franchise in the IPL, Mumbai Indians, is expanding its business globally. MI's parent company, Reliance Industries, has already purchased teams in leagues in South Africa, the USA, and the UAE.

Now, MI has expanded its reach in England as well. MI acquired a 49% stake in the 'Oval Invincibles' team in The Hundred league. This marks the first example of such an entry by IPL franchises into foreign leagues. On January 30, the ECB began the auction process to sell the 49% stake in the Oval Invincibles team. According to a report by CrickBuzz, Reliance Industries secured this stake for approximately £61 million (Rs. 658 crore) through the bidding process.

The Oval Invincibles, having won the Men's tournament in 2023 and 2024 and the Women's tournament in 2021 and 2022, is one of the most successful franchises in The Hundred league. Since its inception, the ECB has held a 49% stake in each franchise, with the remaining 51% owned by local county clubs. The Hundred league, launched in 2021, is played with a unique 100-ball format, different from the traditional T20 format. To expand the league, the ECB has decided to sell its stakes and involve private investors, much like the IPL.

This decision is a significant step for the ECB to increase the league's value and attract investment. Overall, the ECB is moving towards enhancing the value of 'The Hundred' league, creating new opportunities in the world of cricket. The partnership with successful franchises like Mumbai Indians adds excitement to the league and makes the current commercial model even more progressive.
