In his conversation with UN Resident Coordinator Gwen Lewis and UN human rights expert Huma Khan, the principal adviser cited the crackdown on demonstrators at Shapla Chattar, police brutality against protesters following the Delwar Hossain Sayeed verdict, and years of extrajudicial killings. UN officials, in response, reiterated their willingness to help Bangladesh document human rights violations.

The plight of the Rohingya refugees was also discussed, with Lewis expressing concern over the dwindling international aid. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will visit Bangladesh from March 13 to 16. Lewis hopes the visit will focus global attention on the refugee crisis. “We are very concerned about the funding situation,” Lewis said, noting that the Rohingya refugees need USD 15 million per month to continue food supplies and other basic needs.
